1. Why your kidneys are important

The UN Sustainable Development Goals aim to reduce premature death from non- communicable diseases by a third by 2030. The Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 (GBD) was supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It found 1 in every 11 of the world’s population suffer from severe long-term kidney disease (CKD). But fewer than 1 in 10 of people with CKD are aware of their disease, in all countries.

GBD’s estimates say that targeting CKD could be an important step in reaching these goals. The number of individuals with all-stage CKD reached almost 700 million in 2017, which is more people than those with diabetes.

A country’s action plan should include more effective management of risk factors for CKD at the primary care level, improved case- detection among at-risk populations, and better facilities for treating patients with the disease.

At Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS hospital in London, the abdomen of baby Dexter and the kidney of his father, the kidney donor, were 3D scanned and printed to allow the surgeons to rehearse the later successful transplant operation.

2. Your risk of developing kidney disease

The NHS tells us, “There is a calculator you can use to work out your risk of developing moderate to severe kidney disease (CKD) over the next 5 years. You just need to answer some simple questions.

The calculator is only valid if you do not already have a diagnosis of CKD stage 3b or worse. Ask your doctor if you’re unsure. You may wish to use the tool before your next GP or nurse consultation: Use the QKidney Web Calculator.

Put dates of last and next annual kidney blood tests, if needed, and your calculated risk of CKD, in your own personal health plan.
